Why does my gas fireplace keep going out?

First, I have a problem with the switch. Sometimes I have to turn the switch on numerous times before it will light. Then most of the time it stays lit for about 10-20 minutes and then goes out. It will relight but this is a pain in the ***. I am a pretty handy guy but I have never dealt with a gas fireplace before.
