I have an old fireplace insert that I want to replace with a new one. Any advice on the steps to follow? Help?

The existing insert is in my fireplace and it is ugly, from the 1950s. I want a new one and must do this DIY due to my budget. Can anyone walk me through the steps. I would appreciate it.
