Vintage hair......Rag rollers?

Has anyone had experience with rag rollers? I am thinking about getting a set to try and attemp to give myself a 1940's style hair do. My hair is below the shoulder and quite thick so i was wondering if they are any good. I am not attempting to get tight ringlets but more of a vintage hollywood look like Rita Hayworth / Gwen Stefani style hair.....many thanks everyone xx
