It is beyond my comprehension why a civilized country such as the United States of America would have the Death Penalty. People clamor for the death penalty because it is revenge and when we lose someone to violence, we want revenge...that is human nature. But that is where a civilized society should take over. There is not a shred of evidence that the death penalty is a deterrent to crime! Not one shred of evidence!!! It does not deter crime. Data suggests that in states where they have the death penalty, the bordering states have crime rates less than the states with the death penalty. I believe offenders who have committed murder deserve to be locked away from society without the benefit of parole when the murder is a 1st degree conviction.>>>>>>>>>

How might we learn to appreciate the stories of our elders?

1)Reflecting on the fact that his platitudes and stories don't hold his children's interest, the elderly Jacob notes, "My real stories are all out of date. So what if I can speak firsthand about the Spanish flu, the advent of the automobile, world wars, cold wars, guerrilla wars, and Sputnik --- that's all ancient history now. But what else do I have to offer?" (page 110). How might we learn to appreciate the stories and life lessons of our elders and encourage people younger than ourselves to appreciate our own?
